It sits almost flat when not in use, raises a vehicle to an ergonomic height within minutes, and is suited to everything from tyre work and brake repairs to suspension checks and detailing. Understanding how this equipment differs from other car hoists is the first step in choosing the right model.

A surface mount scissor lift uses a set of steel arms arranged in an X or scissor pattern beneath a lifting platform. An electric motor drives a hydraulic power pack, which pumps fluid into cylinders connected to the scissor mechanism. As the cylinders extend, the arms push upward and raise the platform. Lowering is achieved by releasing hydraulic fluid through a controlled valve. The system is mechanically simple, but it is capable of lifting several tonnes with a compact footprint.

Larger or faster models may need three-phase power. The location of the motor and controls also affects usability. The lift should be positioned so the operator has a clear view of the platform and can reach the emergency stop quickly at all times.

Finally, evaluate safety features and supplier support. Look for mechanical locks, overload protection, hydraulic safety valves and clear control interfaces.
